National Honor Society - Yale Chapter
History of the Organization
In 1921, NASSP officially established the National Honor Society. Though many local and regional honor societies existed prior to 1921, no nationwide organization had been founded. Under the leadership of Dr. Edward Rynearson, principal of the Fifth Avenue High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., the organization grew from the original Alpha Chapter at the Fifth Avenue School to more than 1,000 chapters by 1930. Equipped with a constitution, an emblem and motto, and a group of dedicated principals as coordinators, the new NHS organization quickly developed into one of the country's leading educational groups.
Four main purposes have guided chapters of NHS from the beginning: "To create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, and to develop character in the students of secondary schools." (from the NHS Constitution) These purposes also translate into the criteria used for membership selection in each local chapter.

Santa's Helpers

Olivia Kaatz, NHS member, reading a letter from Santa.
NHS members worked with Mrs. Morningstar, a first grade teacher at Yale Elementary, to have "Santa" get letters to her students. The students wrote letters to Santa and they NHS members helped out by helping write responses to their letters on behalf of Santa. The members then delivered the letter and read them to the students. In addition, they shared a little treat from Santa. This was a fun way to work with the local Elementary
Teens for Jeans

Yale's NHS members worked with Aeropostale and DoSomething.org to collect gently used jeans for homeless teens. They were very successful and were able to collect 130 pairs of jeans to be donated to needy teens. They held a competition between grade levels to see who could bring in the most jeans. The senior class was the 2012 winner, bringing in 59 pairs of jeans.
March is Reading Month

NHS members volunteered to read at Yale, Avoca, and Emmett Elementary schools as guest readers for March is Reading Month.
Moore Cemetery Clean-Up
